Google Analytics Tracking

The Google Analytics tracking part of the Affiliates & Tracking extension plugin will do two things for you. It will install regular pageview tracking on your site which tells Google Analytics about your visitors, the pages they visit, the location they are from, and more. The second thing it does is that it will do ecommerce tracking by sending transactions and individual items/products through to Google Analytics for you as sales are made on the site.

Here are the available configuration settings for the Google Analytics tracking feature:

1. Tracking Type

Google Analytics upgraded their tracking code with new Google Analytics 4 (GA4) tracking which uses a new gtag.js script. Their old tracking is now called Universal Analytics (UA) which worked on the analytics.js script.

It is highly recommended that you set up and use the GA4 tracking.

2. Google Measurement ID

This is your unique GA4 Measurement ID for your site/property, which you can obtain on your Google Analytics dashboard under Admin > Property > Data Streams > Web > your corresponding data stream. You will find it there. See the screenshot below.

If you’re using UA, you can find the Tracking ID in your Google Analytics dashboard under Admin > Property > Tracking Info > Tracking Code.

This screenshot shows the measurement ID for GA4.

3. Pageview Tracking

It is recommended that you use this feature and turn it on so that the plugin can install regular Google Analytics tracking code on your site to track pageviews.

If you already have Google Analytics tracking code installed on the site for pageviews, you can turn this off so that your existing tracking code will work as intended and expected.

4. Ecommerce Tracking

The ecommerce tracking uses the Google Analytics ecommerce module to send transactions with their items/products through to Google Analytics as sales are made on your site.

To turn this on, you can select the On radio button in the settings.

For GA4, you might have to enable Enhanced measurement and, if the option is present, Ecommerce and Enhanced Ecommerce under Admin > Property > Data Streams > Web > your corresponding data stream. If you don’t see it there, you may ignore that as our plugin will track it nonetheless. See the measurement ID screenshot above for what the page looks like.

If you’re using UA, you still need to go and turn on the ecommerce tracking in your Google Analytics account accordingly. You can do that under Admin > Property > View > Ecommerce Settings. It is off by default so ensure that you turn it on, or else this will be completely ineffective. This screenshot shows Enhanced Ecommerce tracking in Google Analytics (UA version).
