10 Tips Guide for Improving the Security of Your WiFi Network

Sometimes we do not realize the vulnerability of our network and think that being inside our own home, we will not suffer any attack. Everyone warns that public wifi networks can be unsafe, but… What about domestic wifi networks? With the aim of helping you to understand a little more about wifi security, we have made this small guide with 10 simple tips on WiFi security.

1.- Change the default configuration of the router

All routers come with factory default settings and passwords. Most of us leave them as they are. This is one of the most common errors. It also greatly facilitates the entry of any hacker. Who hasn’t had a problem with their router and searched for their manufacturer’s default password? Well, anyone could find it just like you. Also, you should change your security from WPA-PSK to WPA2-PSK, the safest and most difficult to attack so far.

2.- Change the network password

It is obvious that you must set a password, but not the one that comes by default. Even mobile phones have applications capable of decrypting the default password. It will be very easy for your neighbors to steal your wifi, but it won’t be too complicated to access your private information.

3.- Make the WiFi network not visible

According to https://review-world.lpages.co/ When we buy a new mobile or computer, we like to search our network, enter the password and that’s it. If we follow this advice, it’s not going to be that easy, but it’s also going to be a safer network. It consists of hiding our WiFi network ID, or also called SSID. Now every time we have to connect a new device, we will have to enter the SSID first, to later enter the password. That is, once we have configured it as default, it won’t be necessary anymore. A small step that helps a lot.

4.- Change the network ID wifi or SSID

If you don’t want to hide the name of your network because it’s too uncomfortable, or just doesn’t convince you, it’s best to change the name. The one that comes by default, can give many clues about your router and make it much easier to access it. There are many who recommend using dissuasive names. So whoever wants to steal information from you thinks twice before doing so.

5.- Keep everything up to date

Every day, new malware programs with different functionalities attack your devices. In order to fight them effectively, the best thing to do is to keep your antivirus, operating system, and above all your firmware up to date. By updating it, new definitions, new parameters are introduced, and our system increases its security. Operating systems without technical support (such as Windows XP and earlier), are becoming increasingly insecure. As an extra recommendation, always use official manufacturer’s pages, because what may seem like an update can play a trick on us.

6.- Do not allow the configuration of the router by WiFi

We can make our router configuration can only be modified by connecting our computer via LAN. So if you try to connect to our router by wifi, do not let them change the configuration. This is a recommendation to bear in mind, as if someone manages to connect, they could change the security settings, the password, SSID, etc.

7.- Allow the connection only to a few MAC addresses

The computer, the cell phone, the console, everything has a MAC address. This address is the identification of the network card of each one. Through the configuration, we will be able to limit the network connection, so that it only connects to these cards. In other words, even if we knew the network ID and password, we couldn’t access it with another device. For places where new devices are not usually connected, it can be a valid connection, but otherwise, it is somewhat uncomfortable, as we must configure it every time we want to connect something new.

8.- Check from time to time what devices are connected

Almost all current routers allow us to know which devices are connected to our wifi network. We will be able to see if they are ours or if there is someone connected without permission. It may just be a bit of a bum neighbor, but just in case, we can change the password at that time and avoid problems.

9.- Disconnect it when it is not necessary

In addition to being an unnecessary energy expense, having the router always on, even when not in use, can pose a security problem. This is due to the multiple devices that are connected through it. If any of them suffers a vulnerability, we can suffer attacks throughout the system.

10.- Don’t be reckless

Even if you follow all the recommendations about wifi networks, you will never be 100% sure. There are always weak points, and anyone can be exposed to them. Get a good firewall, and be ready. Even if you think the data on your computer isn’t valuable, it can be for someone who misuses it.

If you have a company, and you handle important information, the best thing is to put yourself in the hands of computer security professionals. They will advise you and help you solve and prevent security problems.
