Newsletter plugin v3.9.3
It’s with great pleasure I do yet another announcement for the WordPress Newsletter plugin. We’ve released version 3.9.3 of the plugin. It’s a minor release but still boasts some solid new features, fixes and improvements.
For details on the changes you can review the release notes. If you can’t wait to get your hands on this version then grab it from your downloads section now! Automatic update available within admin from version 3.9 and up.
New Feature Highlights
Amongst the new features and improvements there are a select few features in particular that I’ll review. Let’s take a look at the details below.
File Upload Custom Field
The new file upload custom field allows people to upload files to their subscriber account. The set-up is simple as seen from the top portion of the above image. You specify a comma separated list of allowed file types and the maximum file size. In the bottom section of the screenshot it is clear that unsupported (restricted by admin) file extensions are not selectable while the subscriber is choosing a file to upload (see “game idea.txt” for example)
Universal Custom Field
Universal Custom Fields allow you to set fields to display across all the mailing lists. As in no matter what mailing lists are chosen, the universal fields you create will always be a field to fill in upon subscribe (like the Email Address field). This setting is available when creating/editing a custom field.
Formidable Subscribers extension
The Formidable Subscribers extension plugin is our latest extension for the Newsletter plugin. Once installed it allows you to easily set-up a Formidable Form to act as a subscribe form for the newsletter plugin. A simple checkbox is added at the end of the form allowing users to subscribe upon form submission. Field mapping allows you to map fields from Formidable Forms to the custom fields in the Newsletter plugin, making sure you capture all the details you need from your subscribers. See the docs for details.
Compatibility improvements to the older themes
We’ve made some general improvements to the layout and styling of the Newsletters > Themes. Appearance wise they have remained quite similar but several behind the scenes changes have been made to help give a more uniform display across email and webmail clients. As I’m sure most of you are aware, email/webmail clients render HTML and CSS differently from client to client. To assure that each person receives a newsletter as you intended, we’ve made the themes as compatible as possible with all the most popular clients.
Queue Stabilizer and Row Locking
The queue stabilizer and row locking locks the rows of the emails currently being sent so that if the cron schedule fires multiple times simultaneously, duplicate records will not be selected and duplicate emails will not be sent out. Basically, with all the validation already in place, this extra push with the queue stabiliser and row locking will make sure that none of your subscribers will receive a duplicate emails from the plugin.
Start Developing Your Own Extension Plugins
We have published an initial set of action hooks, filter hooks and custom functions for the WordPress Newsletter plugin so that developers can start building their own extension plugins.
The latest Formidable Subscribers extension is built purely using the action and filter hooks in the Newsletter plugin without modifying any code in the core plugin.
Please see the Codex for more information and be sure to let us know if you need specific action hooks, filter hooks or custom functions added to the code and we will gladly add it for you. We’ll soon release tutorials on doing certain things and also the ability for developers to submit their own extensions to be sold on our site.
