How to resize images, but not crop them

I'm looking to add images to my slideshow of various sizes.

I would like the images to be resized, but NOT cropped.

I understand this would create blank space around the images, which I am fine with.

Can this be done at all?

Yes, you can set the layout to fixed and then turn off the resize images setting.
