[Solved] Slideshow doesn't work after upgrade

I just updated the plugin and Wordpress -- now running WP 3.9.1 and Slideshow Gallery 1.4.4.1.

After updating, the slideshow does not work, and in fact, breaks the layout on the homepage -- the slideshow does not appear and nothing below the slideshow is rendered.

I have tested it with all plugins deactivated except this one and the problem persists, so that seems to rule out conflict with another plugin. I have tested with Twenty Twelve theme and the problem still persists.

I read here about conflicts with multiple calls to jquery library and I did have a <script> call to jquery that I'd placed in the header. However, after removing it, the problem still persists.

For now I have resorted to deactivating the plugin so that, even while the slideshow is blank, at least the home page is fully displayed.

I have fixed that Javascript error for you, jQuery was incorrectly used with the dollar sign ($) instead of it's object (jQuery)
