Storing images offsite (amazon S3)

How hard would it be to modify the plugin to be able to store images in an Amazon S3 bucket.

I've been looking through the code and have seen various places where paths are hard-coded. I'd just like to have a good idea of where to go in the code before I dig in.

I'd be willing to share my changes if I get it to work.
